Self Progress is a Slow Process

We all want to be better, be a better version of ourselves or even a version of someone else (which is a bad idea for many reasons). Wanting to improve who and how we are as a person is normal and part of life. Wanting to make self progress and change things is how we adapt to live and grow from experiences but we can't forget to appreciate how far we've already came and who we are in this current moment.
A lot of problems people tend to run into when attempting to improve themselves in some way is that they expect immediate results and perfection. There is no magic pill to take in order to be smart, lose weight, or improve your emotional intelligence. There are no short cuts and the reality is that progress takes A LONGGGG TIME. You will mess up and make mistakes. You will get busy and stop focusing on making progress. Life gets in the way and your mind will wander.
The importance in this is to not give up and to remind yourself to jump back on the wagon and keep trying. The nice thing is though, one day you will wake up and realize you have made progress and improved aspects of yourself over time without you even really noticing. It's like as you got taller as a kid, you didn't see a change every single day until you compared your current height to the height you were a few years prior. You won't see every step and every time improvement, but they are there...waiting to be seen later down the road.
The point being is that it's so hard and nothing worth having comes easy. It's important to not give up because of ego or impatience, but to allow yourself to continue growing and then later reflect on all that has changed.
